The Conservatives have taken the former Labour stronghold of Ashfield with a convincing win.

Tory Lee Anderson, a former miner, won by a majority of 5,733 votes beating Independent candidate Jason Zodrozny, who gained 13,498 votes, into second place.

Labour’s tearful Natalie Fleet could only manage third place with 11,971 votes in the pro-Brexit area blaming the toxic nature of politics surrounding the divisive issue of leaving the European Union.

The constituency had been held by Labour for almost forty years. Previous MP Gloria de Piero, who won the seat with just 441 votes in 2017, decided to stand down citing personal reasons and the abuse she had received on social media over Brexit.
